There’s a well-informed, well-researched, fact-based opinion article over at the Huffington Post that should be getting a shitload of attention. Time will tell.
The writer, Larry Womack, (yes, a *man*) is defending HRC, pointing out the mind-numbingly huge amount of sexist rhetoric that’s been spoon-fed to the American people for the last 40 years.
The defining element of her 2016 campaign is the use of a private email server. She’s not using it to hide anything. She deleted 30,000 emails that were a) not relevant, and b) potentially embarrassing private moments.
Much was made about emails hacked and leaked by Colin Powell, but no one is suggesting that he be put in jail for them. When he wrote to Clinton, he explained his method of intentionally bypassing federal record-keeping laws:
I didn’t have a Blackberry. What I did do was have a personal computer that was hooked up to a private phone line (sounds ancient.) So I could communicate with a wide range of friends directly without it going through the State Department servers. I even used it to do business with some foreign leaders and some of the senior folks in the Department on their personal email accounts. I did the same thing on the road in hotels.
… There is a real danger. If it is public that you have a BlackBerry and it it [sic] government and you are using it, government or not, to do business, it may become an official record and subject to the law.
No one said Boo. This is no different than having a private email server. No different. But we’re vilifying Clinton for it and not Colin Powell. Why? Because he’s a he.
Womack points out:
When the Bush administration was discovered to have erased millions of emails illegally sent by 22 administration officials through private, RNC-owned accounts, in order to thwart an investigation into the politically motivated firing of eight US attorneys, just one talk show covered it that Sunday.
When Mitt Romney wiped servers, sold government hard drives to his closest aides and spent $100,000 in taxpayer money to destroy his administration’s emails, it was barely an issue.
Mitt did this before leaving office in Massachusetts.
And no one said Boo. Sure, it was mentioned, but the media didn’t make a big deal out of it.
They have with Clinton. Over and over and over again.
Why? Because she’s a strong woman who doesn’t take any shit, that’s why.
Sure, she’s rich and connected and makes ultra-use out of that. But she’s also self-made, coming up from nothing, didn’t have a rich daddy to give her a few millions dollars as a “small loan”. Didn’t inherit millions. She used Bill, a serial philanderer, to help her go up the ladder, but she didn’t need him to get her law degree. Didn’t need him for a vast amount of everything else she’s accomplished. She did it all despite being married to him. She might have thought, “Okay, Bill, if you’re gonna play it that way, I’ll play it mine.”
3.5 billion women should be applauding her, but they’re not. Why? Because the male-oriented view of this patriarchal society has masterfully manipulated us into what to think. They don’t want to admit that she has slogged through the cesspool of male-dominated careers with intelligence and dignity.
Until this man, Larry Womack, stepped up and said what needed to be said. That we’re all a bunch of sexist pigs and we’re too ashamed to admit it.
Well, I’m done being a pawn in their sexist game. Don’t “hate” her. Be angry. But be honest. Be angry for her idiotic notion of a no-fly zone in Syria, baiting the Russians. Be angry at her ties to Wall Street. Be angry at her refusal to re-install Glass-Steagal. Be angry that she has stupidly kept the press at a distance. Be angry that she hasn’t been as rigorous a campaigner against Trump like she was with Obama.
But hate? Seriously? There are plenty of better candidates to hate.
I hated George W. Bush. He’s a drunken dumbass with destructive policies who committed war crimes and got away with it. Republicans didn’t blink, but they had a fucking fit over Bill lying about getting blown in the oval office so they tried to impeach him. Impeach him, for fuck’s sake. Why? Because he got blown in the oval office. They were hypocritically jealous. And they hate Democrats like a Progressive hates fossil fuels. Giuliani and that dumbfuck Gingrich are hating on HRC because Bill cheated … and didn’t dump her. They’ve each cheated on spouses and dumped them. Gingrich did it thrice. They’ve surpassed themselves as huge hypocrites.
I hated Ronald Reagan from the moment I heard he was running against Carter and hated him even more for interfering with a legal union strike and then even more when he committed treason and got away with it. I’ve always hated Mitt Romney. He’s a religious bigot. He also didn’t implement single payer healthcare in Massachusetts. The legislature came up with a public option and voters made sure he signed the goddamn thing.
I really hate Donald Trump. Have done ever since the motherfucker cheated on Ivana and publicly dragged her through the mud. He’s an ugly piece of work and he’s gotten away with being an ugly piece of work.
Despite a few things I disagree with her about, I don’t hate Hillary Clinton. She’s not the goddamn devil. She’s not *evil*. She’s not exactly Progressive, but she’s a liberal and she’s certainly not a Right Wing stooge. She’s also not a philandering hypocrite. So enough already.
