Many Desperate Voters Are So Unmoored, They Are Grabbing for a Loose Cannon, the Ultimate Corrupt Huckster… in a Long American Tradition
“Listen, don’t get the idea I’m one of those goddamn radicals… Don’t get the idea I’m knocking the American system. My rackets are run on strictly American lines. Capitalism, call it what you like, gives to each and every one of us a great opportunity if only we seize it with both hands and make the most of it.”
Trump didn’t say that. It was Al Capone.
There’s an excellent article over at Alternet, written by Tom Engelhardt, about how we Americans are taken in by this orange-haired huckster.
Or think of it another way (and it may be the newest way of all): a significant part of the white working class, at least, feels as if, whether economically or psychologically, its back is up against the wall and there’s nowhere left to go. Under such circumstances, many of these voters have evidently decided that they’re ready to send a literal loose cannon into the White House; they’re willing, that is, to take a chance on the roof collapsing, even if it collapses on them.
That is the new and unrecognizable role that Donald Trump has filled. It’s hard to conjure up another example of it in our recent past. The Donald represents, as a friend of mine likes to say, the suicide bomber in us all. And voting for him, among other things, will be an act of nihilism, a mood that fits well with imperial decline.
Think of him as a message in a bottle washing up on our shore. After all…
This is not about Donald Trump. It’s about us.
What he does not say is that those White Working Class Men (and Women) who feel our country is in decline, that they’re losing “their” America, is that their racism is being taken away from them and they don’t like it one damn bit. Racist? Of course. Trump Campaign CEO Steve Bannon made a Nazi-like propaganda film, for fuck’s sake.
Half of us, the racist half, and those who hate Clinton so much we’re willing to cut off our nose to spite our face, are willing to take a chance on the roof collapsing, even if it collapses on us. Voting for him is an act of suicidal nihilism.
In case you’re wondering, dictionary definition of Nihilism:
–the belief that life is meaningless.
Philosophy: extreme skepticism maintaining that nothing in the world has a real existence. In historical terms, it’s the doctrine of an extreme Russian revolutionary party circa 1900, which found nothing to approve of in the established social order.
Now, more relevant, IMO, is the form of Moral Nihilism:
Moral nihilism, also known as ethical nihilism, is the meta-ethical view that morality does not exist as something inherent to objective reality; therefore no action is necessarily preferable to any other. For example, a moral nihilist would say that killing someone, for whatever reason, is not inherently right or wrong.
“I Could Stand In the Middle Of Fifth Avenue And Shoot Somebody And I Wouldn’t Lose Any Voters”
Unfortunately, he’s right.
And last but not least,
Epistemological Nihilism: (pertaining to epistemology, a branch of philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge) It is a form of skepticism in which all knowledge is accepted as being possibly untrue or as being unable to be confirmed true.(from Wiki)
That pretty much sums up our current phase of TV media, most of whom refuse to fact-check because they claim they’re “being equal to all sides”, except there aren’t two sides to what is factual. Either it’s fact or it’s a lie.
It also sums up Trump supporters. They refuse to see him for who he really is. They’re the dumbass who donates to an evangelical preacher on TV. They’re the dumbass who watches a program just to see this narcissist say “You’re fired.”
And they are willing to let the roof drop down on all of us just because their perception of the world is in chaos. They can’t be racist anymore, and their jobs are in jeopardy–blaming it on other races; not realizing that Trump doesn’t give a shit about American jobs and he’s proven that by hiring foreign workers for his Florida hotel and by buying Chinese steel for New York’s Trump Tower because it was cheaper–and because he owes the Chinese government several hundred million dollars. In other words, they’re anarchists. And Trump is taking that self-destructionism all the way to the bank. AKA, the White House.
